New Head of Music for UQ

The University of Queensland’s (UQ) Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences (HASS) is a large, multi-disciplinary Faculty with a broad academic profile, substantial research achievements and a commitment to public engagement.

HASS has entered an era of regenerative leadership. Executive Dean Professor Heather Zwicker joined UQ in spring 2018, and brings a fresh vision of interdisciplinary collaboration, public accountability and commitment to the student experience. Many Heads of School are also new to their roles and eager to ensure that HASS continues to be a powerhouse for disciplinary and interdisciplinary research across our Schools, Institutes and Centres, as well as boasting exciting, responsive teaching in a broad range of programs.

HASS has a strong identity and long tradition of innovation and leadership, offering a broad range of programs – including one of UQ’s largest, the Bachelor of Arts.

The Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences produces nationally and internationally regarded research across its many and varied disciplines. In addition to strong performance with external funding, UQ researchers in humanities and social sciences have won prizes,gained reputations for research excellence, performed exceptionally in the Excellence for Research in Australia (ERA) exercise and in global university rankings, among many other measures.

School of Music

School of Music seeks new Head

The Head will provide a vision and implement policies that will foster excellence in research, teaching and engagement in the School of Music. The Head will provide academic leadership in core areas such as: improving research quality and impact; increasing external funding through grant success and philanthropy; enhancing the postgraduate research culture and experience; strengthening relationships with relevant community stakeholders, professions and institutions; and developing the undergraduate and postgraduate coursework teaching programs in line with the innovations and expectations outlined in UQ’s Student Strategy (student-strategy.uq.edu.au).

The Head will have outstanding leadership and vision, and have the management desire and experience to implement the strategic vision of the School in collaboration with the Executive Dean of the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences. This vision will aim to enhance the teaching and research excellence of the School within a financially sustainable resource environment.

The Head will foster effective relationships with government, industry, community and other key stakeholders. The Head will additionally liaise and collaborate with external research partners and extend the range and reach of the School’s research and teaching agenda both nationally and internationally.
