Academics engage in blogging and social media for various reasons: to make their research more widely known, to find collaborative opportunities, to debunk myths, or to vent frustration, or general musings about life the universe and more.

The Science of Blogging founded by Dr Peter Janiszewski, PhD, published obesity researcher, science and medical writer and Travis Saunders Certified Exercise Physiologist, PhD student. The blog post on their site was written by Bethany Brookshire, Blogger at Science News. The post is four years old and continues to receive comments. In her post she has advice on approaching writing a science blog, advice which is applicable to starting a blog for any discipline:

  1. Establish what you want to accomplish
  2. Establish the tone of your blog
  3. Read the blogs in your field and outside of it
  4. Think about whether you want to be pseudonymous or under your real names
  5. Get started!
  6. Get the word out!
  7. Get protective headgear
  8. Ask questions
